We seek to preserve and promote the richness of the Byzantine Tradition.
History of the Seminary Press:
Reverend Monsignor John Opalenick, OESL was the first known manager of the Byzantine Seminary Press. For thirty years, he directed its operation and established the needed contacts with artists and vendors throughout the United States and in Europe. Under his management, the Press successfully grew to a respected and well known provider of a wide variety of books, liturgical items, and religious articles for a great number of people and churches, both Catholic and Orthodox. He advanced the liturgical changes and constantly sought to improve the resources, materials, and goods offered by the Press. Mrs. Judy Hopey took on the position of secretary and director of day-to-day operations of the Byzantine Seminary Press.
One of the offerings of the Press that is much-used throughout the Metropolitan Church is the ecclesiastical calendar. This work was entrusted to the Press by its originator, Father Julius Grigassy, and throughout the years, the calendar has become the standard reference for countless churches, individuals, and households.
After Monsignor Opalenick fell asleep in the Lord, Sister Seraphim Olsafsky, OSBM was promoted by Metropolitan Judson as the new manager of the Byzantine Seminary Press. Bringing her artistic talent, eye for beauty, and a wide range of experience to her new ministry, she continued the ministry of the Byzantine Seminary Press and worked to evolve a gallery/museum.
Following Sister Seraphim, Sister Josetta Kriss, OSBM succeeded her until June of 2010. As the scope of the enterprise increased, her duties were enhanced accordingly; she was called upon countless times to adapt methods, procedures, and products in order to serve the needs of the Church and its people.
Cathy Silvestri was inaugurated to the Press in 2010. Under her management, the Byzantine Seminary Press made great strides in outreach and selection.
The Seminary Press is currently managed by Patty Bovee, who assumed the position of Director in June 2017.
