The truth about exorcists

“The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist,” wrote Charles Baudelaire.

But Catholics know better.

The devil exists and is active today. Exorcisms still take place regularly: Many Catholic dioceses have a designated exorcist priest.

Exorcisms are not just a Hollywood drama, although filmmakers and the general public seem to have an unhealthy fascination with them.

That’s exactly why the world needs a new movie: “Triumph Over Evil: Battle of the Exorcists.”

Film made in cooperation with exorcists’ association

Made in cooperation with the International Association of Exorcists, “Triumph Over Evil” is the first and only Vatican-approved documentary about exorcisms.

Catch it in theaters worldwide on October 30, 2025. You can get tickets here.

You’ll learn how to safeguard yourself and your loved ones from real evil—and find lasting comfort and hope in God’s all-powerful protection.

An interview with the director of ‘Triumph over Evil’

Giovanni Ziberna, director of “Triumph over Evil,” became interested in the topic when an exorcist he knew asked him to serve as an assistant at an exorcism.

Like most people, he had an idea about what an exorcism would look like, but the reality was a big surprise:

“An exorcism is actually a deeply spiritual place of great light, where the Lord triumphs over darkness.”

Realizing how common misconceptions are about exorcisms, he knew the world needed to know the reality.

In conversation with Aleteia, Ziberna shed light on why this documentary is so important—and why, believe it or not, it’s not a scary film.

Why is the movie’s message such an important one?

“There is so much misinformation about spiritual matters in our world,” Ziberna said.

“On one side, the level of confusion is extremely high. On the other, the very limited theological and spiritual formation of many people leads countless souls to fall right into the devil’s traps.

“This film was created to bring clarity, to offer truth about these realities, to give the official voice of the Catholic Church on these topics, and also to provide a kind of compass—a way to navigate a world full of spiritual snares.”

What are some things you learned from the exorcists while making this film? Is this a scary film?

“The most important lesson? When you are in God’s grace and you entrust yourself to the Lord, you don’t have to fear the devil. It is actually the devil who fears those who rely on God.

That’s why this film is absolutely not a horror film. It deliberately distances itself from a certain kind of cinema made only to shock and frighten people. Instead, it tells of the greatness and majesty of God, who comes to save and free.

The goal is to bring light and understanding, not fear or superstition. I wanted viewers to feel encouraged and strengthened, not anxious.”

What did you learn about Satan from making this film?

“What every believer needs to know is that Satan exists. He is a personal and spiritual figure whose goal is to lead human beings to perdition and make them fall into sin.

The biggest trap the devil sets and the most dangerous thing is precisely to try to make people lose grace and fall away from God.

But he is predictable: his methods are always the same in the end. Human beings are fragile and, especially when they rely too much on themselves, they keep falling into the same traps.”

What is the most important thing you want people to know about “Triumph over Evil”?

“This film is not a film of fear. It’s not made to scare people. Rather, it’s a film that encourages them to reflect on their spiritual journey. It’s a kind of catechesis that directs people towards the Lord, who is the only victor over evil.

Sin is actually far more dangerous than possession. Although possession is indeed a state of great suffering, it’s sin that truly causes souls to fall.

The key takeaway is to be vigilant about one’s own soul and state of grace; to rely on faith and on the Church; and to use all the holy methods of sacred tradition to stay in grace, seek forgiveness, and walk the right path.”
