From July 16 to 20, over 220 clergy and lay faithful gathered in Whiting, Indiana for the third biannual North American Byzantine Catholic Assembly, hosted by the Eparchy of Parma. This year’s theme, “Come Let Us Worship and Bow Before Christ”, underscored the Church’s commitment to deepening faith and strengthening communal devotion. The Assembly commenced with a clergy track followed by the official opening for both clergy and laity, inviting all faithful to unite in worship, discussion, and fellowship.
This Spirit-filled event brought together engaging keynotes, heartfelt liturgies, and rich fellowship. Participants explored essential themes—evangelization, sustainability, and the mission of Eastern Catholicism in North America—while receiving spiritual nourishment and a special message from Pope Leo XIV, the first U.S.-born pontiff. The Holy Father also extended an Apostolic Blessing for the entire Metropolia.
Beyond the Assembly’s sacred moments, attendees embraced the spirit of Whiting’s charming downtown, strolled through scenic Lakefront Park, and explored nearby cultural gems. Just a short drive away in Dolton, Illinois, many visited Pope Leo XIV’s childhood home—and even stopped by his favorite local pizzeria! One heartfelt highlight was a visit to Annunciation Parish, where a busload of participants—including Archbishop Jalakh, Secretary of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches—spent a meaningful afternoon steeped in local mission and hospitality.
This gathering truly welcomed the broader community into a living celebration of faith, heritage, and hope—framed by Chicagoland hospitality, outdoor prayers, and a moving closing procession.
