Pittsburgh Crèche Blessing

PITTSBURGH — The Christian Leaders Fellowship, an ecumenical group of local bishops and denominational executives, will lead a prayer service at the annual dedication of the Pittsburgh Crèche, Friday, Nov. 16 at noon in the plaza at US Steel Towers on Grant Street, downtown. Archbishop William C. Skurla, head of the Byzantine Catholic Archeparchy of Pittsburgh, will participate.
Archbishop William to receive omophor from Pope Benedict XVI

The sole Eastern Catholic hierarch participating in the June 29 pallium ceremony in Rome, Metropolitan Archbishop William C. Skurla has been informed that he will receive the omophor from Pope Benedict XVI rather than the traditional Latin pallium. The Archbishop is leader of the Byzantine Catholic (Ruthenian) Metropolitan Church sui iuris in America.

Region XV of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) are in Rome for their ad limina visits with Pope Benedict XVI. Region XV includes all Eastern Catholic Bishops in the United States. Metropolitan William C. Skurla (Pittsburgh), Bishop John M. Kudrick (Parma), and Bishop Gerald N. Dino (Phoenix) of the Byzantine Catholic (Ruthenian) Metropolitan Church in the USA join their fellow Eastern Catholic bishops for the May 14-20 visits with Pope Benedict XVI and other Vatican officials. Former Administrator of the Archeparchy of Pittsburgh Very Reverend Eugene P. Yackanich also is accompanying newly-enthroned Metropolitan William, who assumed his Archieparchial duties April 18.

Over 1,600 unique viewers from across the U.S. and Europe watched the live broadcast of the Enthronement of Metropolitan Archbishop William C. Skurla yesterday, with a total of 1,785 hours 21 minutes 28 seconds watched. The event took place before over 700 invitees at the Byzantine Catholic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Munhall, Pa.

WOODLAND PARK, N.J. – Most Reverend William C. Skurla, D.D. has been named Metropolitan Archbishop of the Byzantine Catholic (Ruthenian) Archeparchy of Pittsburgh. Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI announced his official appointment from the Vatican Thursday, Jan. 19. He will be enthroned Wednesday, April 18.
